“I think the dubstep that has come over to the US, and certain producers — who I can’t even be bothered naming — have definitely hit upon a sort of frat-boy market where there’s this macho-ism being reflected in the sounds and the way the music makes you feel. And to me, that is a million miles away from where dubstep started. It’s a million miles away from the ethos of it. It’s been influenced so much by electro and rave, into who can make the dirtiest, filthiest bass sound, almost like a pissing competition, and that’s not really necessary. And I just think that largely that is not going to appeal to women. I find that whole side of things to be pretty frustrating, because that is a direct misrepresentation of the sound as far as I’m concerned.”

From my interview with James Blake in this week’s Phoenix. I particularly recommend reading up to the last two questions where he talks about covering female pianists (Feist, Joni Mitchell) in the ‘American frat-boy dubstep market’. (His words not mine.) He was really stoked on talking about this.

Stumbled upon this today - the official video for We Call Love. You know, it’s risky doing things on a budget these days. Some things are riskier than others tho..so when you shoot a music video on an evident budget of under $100 it might end up looking like the one above. Putting those two girls in a video is a cruel joke especially since you get a good look at one of them closer to the end of the video…I mean I’m sure the Art Department boys must have had some prettier friends that were down to do a freebie. The fact is that girls like that only look appealing when you are about as fucked as the ones in this vid…and only then. Does anyone remember the Wolfmother - Woman (MSTRKRFT remix) video? Same budget idea (Russian escorts can’t be that expensive, especially if all they need to do is shake their ass) except the girls are way better looking and that makes the whole video a lot more appealing. The point is clear - make sure to get good looking females for your music videos. Having said all that, the annoying thing about Art Department is that I don’t totally hate the video despite my primal biological instincts telling me to do so. As for the track, I really liked it ever since it came out on their The Drawing Board album. Crosstown Rebels just put out a We Call Love EP with remixes by Daphni and Dj Harvey. Give it a listen, I’m really not totally sold on the Daphni remix, but the Dj Harvey version is worth a listen.
